Super Simple Centers

Super Simple Centers

Petal Perfect Flowers are super fun and easy to create! With so many combinations, you can make a garden of unique flowers for any quilt in no time at all. They are gorgeous just like they are and with a center of a mere three and a half inches, they easily meet most batting manufacturers' minimum quilting requirements.

But why stop there? Follow along as we bring you a few Super Simple Centers... just for the joy of it!! We will use some basic rulers for some but all can be achieved with simple free motion quilting.

Before you can make a center, you have to have your flower. See how here.

Don't have a petal perfect ruler yet? Get yours here!

So many flowers.... so many variations! Here we go...

 #1) Peony in the Center:

Here the framework is a single Petal Perfect flower using petal D. Beginning at the center mark, stitch into the petal creating a leaf design and return to the center. Stitch back into the leaf, creating a single vein, returning again to the center point. Five of these and your center is complete.

#2) Brackets & Parenthesis

With a single flower using petal "A" as the framework, this whimsical center is fun and carefree. Beginning at the needle stop between any of the petals begin making a few brackets as you work your way to the centermost point of the flower. At any time, (perhaps for the second go round) change and begin to stitch scallops or "parentheses" instead. This center ends with a small curl.

#3) A LOVE-ly Center:

This stitchout as shown begins at the center mark of a single petal "D" flower. Basically we are stitching five hearts within each petal, kissing each needle stop as we pass by. The design begins and ends in the center of the flower.

#4) Curvy Center:

Many different designs can be achieved using simple curved rulers in the center of our Petal Perfect flowers. Here, inside this single "E" petal flower a Bernina ruler was used stitching back and forth from needle stops to the center. This particular curve creates a pleasing daisy flower inside. The depth of the curve dictates the size of these petals.

#5) Super Simple Circle:

If the flower is already complex, like this combination of petals "A" and "B", you may just want a circle in the middle. It just doesn't get any simpler than that! Again, with Petal Perfect flowers already fulfilling the requirement of stitching for most batting companies without a center, its really a matter of adding a fun detail rather than being concerned about the stability of the quilt.

#6) Free-motion Radiating Swirls:

This whimsical center is another that starts and finishes at the center mark of our flower. Shown here in the single petal "C" flower, we stitch a wiggly line far into the petal (leaving room for a second or even a third) then put a small swirl or circle on the end and wiggle back to the center. Careful backtracking gives a more polished look. I prefer more of a ribbon vibe. Change the length of the lines as well as what goes on their tip.. (think star, heart, asterisk!) The variations are limitless!

 #7)  Pow! Bam! Zap!

This super fun center reminded me of a comic strip so that's where it got its name! It's really just a jagged spiral that started at the needle stop and ended in the center. In the video it is shown on a single petal "C" flower. Vary the length and width for more fun!
